Join us on our missions as we follow in the footsteps of the original Wildlife Warrior, Steve Irwin, and continue the work that he was so passionate about. Helen Haines loses second leg after car attack, husband confirms | ABC NEWS

The husband of Helen Haines, Phil Haines, has confirmed the federal MP has had both legs amputated after Monday's attack in Wangaratta.

He said Ms Haine's left leg was amputated on Monday. They had hoped to save her right leg but surgeons had to remove her right leg today.

"What took place on Monday was a horrendous incident, and as you know, it's caused Helen significant injuries," he says.

"As a result of that, Helen's left leg was amputated on Monday.

"We had been hoping her right leg would be saved, but as of this afternoon or this morning, the surgeons also had to remove her right leg."

Mr Haines said his wife's condition is now stable.

"We are grateful and thankful that, at this stage, both her heart and her mind are in good shape," he says.
