MP Helen Haines attacked outside Wangaratta office | ABC NEWS
Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has confirmed that a person is in custody after independent MP Helen Haines was struck by a car outside her electorate office in Wangaratta.
A 43-year-old suspect is in custody, but Mr Albanese says it is too early to say what the motivation was behind the attack.
Police and intelligence agencies are investigating the incident and the joint counter-terrorism team has been activated. Ms Haines is in a critical condition.

Can this NZ election help stop Kiwis leaving for Australia? | ABC NEWS
In 2023, a centre-right coalition swept into power in New Zealand promising to get the country “back on track”.
Three years later unemployment is at an 11-year high, tens of thousands have left for Australia and Māori and Pacific communities say they’ve been hit hardest.
The government says its cuts and fast-tracked projects will drive growth, while the opposition says working families are paying the price. New Zealand heads to the polls on November 7.
