“Be careful online.”

If your child uses social media, gaming or messaging apps, you probably tell them this.

But being careful can’t shield them from every risk. Technology can give abusers new ways to target, groom and sexually exploit children, from manipulating them through messages to sharing or livestreaming abuse.

A new UNICEF report found that 1 in 5 children across 21 countries experienced technology-facilitated sexual exploitation and abuse in just one year.

Keeping children and young people safe in digital spaces can’t be their responsibility alone. We need safer platforms, stronger accountability and better support.

UNICEF, the United Nations agency for children, works to protect the rights of every child, everywhere, especially the most disadvantaged children and in the toughest places to reach.

Across more than 190 countries and territories, we do whatever it takes to help children survive, thrive, and fulfil their potential.

Before, during, and after humanitarian emergencies, UNICEF is on the ground, bringing lifesaving help and hope to children and families. Impartial, non-political, and neutral, our focus is protecting every child and safeguarding their lives and futures.
