The film is set in the stagnant seventies. The film's protagonists are students who have no idea that the country of their birth will soon disappear from the world map. Meanwhile, these high school graduates are carefree students at university. The main characters are Sergey, Lyuda, and their mutual friend Stepan. Sergey begins a touching courtship with the kind and trusting Lyuda, and they begin a beautiful romance.

However, a new student, a striking girl named Katya, soon appears in the class. Sergey, taking advantage of Lyuda's illness, begins to flirt with her. Lyuda learns of this and considers his behavior betrayal. Stepan, secretly in love with Lyudmila, begins helping her with her studies, showing her affection, and they spend more and more time together...
