MP Helen Haines attacked outside Wangaratta office | ABC NEWS

Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has confirmed that a person is in custody after independent MP Helen Haines was struck by a car outside her electorate office in Wangaratta.

A 43-year-old suspect is in custody, but Mr Albanese says it is too early to say what the motivation was behind the attack.

Police and intelligence agencies are investigating the incident and the joint counter-terrorism team has been activated. Ms Haines is in a critical condition.
