Meghan Markle says she was informed about "disturbing allegations" about her estranged father Thomas Markle in 2018. He is being investigated by the authorities in the Philippines over allegations relating to images of child abuse.
In a statement, Meghan said a letter containing allegations against Thomas Markle was sent to the UK police that year and subsequently shared with her. She described the allegations as "more sickening than one could ever imagine" and said her "sincerest hope is that justice will be fully served and that the priority remains the safety and protection of innocent children".
Her comments come after reports that images of child sexual abuse allegedly belonging to her father had been found at his former home in the Philippines. Thomas Markle, who is 82 and based in the US, denies possessing any such images and describes the claims as “sick lies”.
Meghan Markle said: "I am deeply distressed at the news that has come to light in the last 24 hours, and my thoughts are with any children who may have been harmed."
She said that when she received the letter outlining allegations against her father, she was "given assurance that these were being investigated". She added she hoped it could be understood why she had kept her distance from her father and did "not allow him to have contact with our children".
This was "to protect them", Meghan said, adding that she had "trusted that the authorities were doing the same for other families".
Meghan's half-brother, Thomas Markle junior, told the Sun newspaper that he had found child abuse images at his father's home in the Philippines and reported it to the police.
The Philippines Department of Justice told the BBC that "the matter is currently being investigated" by an anti-human trafficking and child sexual exploitation task force. The country’s interior minister told the BBC that national police had secured Thomas Markle’s computer to conduct a comprehensive digital forensic examination.
Harry and Meghan and their two children returned to the UK in August after six years in the US.

The fall of el-Fasher in Sudan in October 2025 was on the most brutal chapters of the civil war that has raged between the government's Sudanese Armed Forces (SAF) and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF).
Now, a BBC investigation has found evidence RSF fighters systematically destroyed the city's healthcare system during their long siege and subsequent takeover.
UN human rights chief Volker Türk called the findings "deeply disturbing", saying multiple attacks by the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) on civilian infrastructure, including health facilities, were serious violations of international humanitarian law and may amount to war crimes.
The RSF rejected BBC's findings. A paramilitary-aligned health minister in Nairobi dismissed the allegations as Sudanese government propaganda.

Ukraine is still recording issues with the Starlink network, sources within the defence ministry say, after Donald Trump said limits on the satellite uplink had been reversed by Elon Musk.
The sources told the BBC that instances of drones experiencing connection loss at speeds of 161km/h (100mph) were being recorded, hampering military operations.
The US president had denied instructing the tech billionaire to restrict connectivity to Starlink's military-grade counterpart, Starshield, before saying on Thursday that Musk had "put it back".
Musk previously said he was not behind the slowdown, which affected Ukraine's ability to use attack drones and co-ordinate defensive operations.

A US judge has ordered President Donald Trump to answer questions under oath in his defamation lawsuit against the BBC by 11 December.
Trump is suing the BBC over an episode of Panorama that edited together two different sections of a speech he gave before the riot at the US Capitol in 2021.
Charles Tobin, a lawyer representing the BBC, said in court that "we still haven't been able to depose the plaintiff" with two months left in the discovery period, during which both sides are legally required to exchange information with each other on their case.
Trump cancelled a previous deposition on 16 October, citing "matters of national importance" while he was campaigning in Georgia.
The judge in the case, US Magistrate Judge Enjoliqué Lett, said that Trump must sit for the deposition by 11 December, unless the discovery period is extended.

Cyber-security experts have used AI tools to uncover a major flaw in the programming language behind many websites, known as PHP. That has led governments, businesses and other organisations around the world scrambling to fix the problem, with many sites going dark. Analysts say hackers have made millions of attempts - using AI - to try to exploit the problem.
We hear from cyber researcher Ryan Austin, who discovered the PHP flaw, and ask our tech correspondent about the power and danger of AI.
Also in the Global News Podcast:
07:23 We hear from Arab-Israeli voters - also known as Palestinian citizens of Israel - as Israel prepares for its first general election since the Hamas attacks of 7th October 2023. Polls show that neither Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu nor his main rivals have an easy path to forming a coalition government. That means small Arab-majority parties could hold the balance of power, depending on whom they decide to support.

The UK has "glaring gaps" in its ability to defend the Arctic region, leaving it vulnerable to potential Russian attacks, a report by MPs has warned.
The Commons Defence Committee said a shortage of Royal Navy warships and submarines was leaving the country's critical infrastructure in the High North, including undersea cables and energy supplies, exposed.
In the event of a conflict, the report added that Russia could threaten the UK's population, civilian and military infrastructure and vital supply routes across the Atlantic from the US.
The Ministry of Defence said it is "clear-eyed about the threat Russia posed" and is investing heavily to protect Britain's undersea cables.
