जॉन स्टुअर्ट मिल का जन्म, 20 मई 1806 को लंदन, इंग्लैंड में हुआ था। वह इतिहास के बड़े दार्शनिकों में से एक थे। उनके विचारों ने आधुनिक लोकतंत्र, उदारवाद और व्यक्तिगत स्वतंत्रता की नींव रखी।
उनका बचपन काफी अलग था। उनके पिता जेम्स मिल ने, उन्हें बहुत कड़ी और विचारशील शिक्षा दी। मिल ने तीन साल की उम्र में ग्रीक, और आठ साल में लैटिन सीख ली। बचपन से ही उन्हें स्वतंत्र सोच, खुले विचार, और सत्य की खोज का महत्व समझाया गया। इसी वजह से उन्होंने बाद में अपनी प्रसिद्ध किताब, "On Liberty" लिखी, जिसमें उन्होंने बताया कि, हर व्यक्ति को अपनी राय रखने, व्यक्त करने, और अपने जीवन के फैसले खुद लेने का अधिकार होना चाहिए, बशर्ते कि वह दूसरों को नुकसान न पहुँचाए।
मिल ने "Utilitarianism" में यह सिद्ध किया, कि किसी भी काम की नैतिकता उसी आधार पर होती है जितनी खुशी वह बढ़ाता है, या घटाता है। उन्होंने कहा कि "संतुष्ट सूअर के मुकाबले असंतुष्ट इंसान होना बेहतर है", जो हमें प्रेरित करता है कि हमें हमेशा ऊँची सोच और आत्म-विकास पर ध्यान देना चाहिए।
